Building the Future of Goan Football — Coach Melwin Joseph Fernandes
Inside the GFDC coaching philosophy with one of its long-standing mentors at Quepem and Cuncolim.
Melwin Joseph Fernandes is a football coach with more than 12 years of experience developing young talent across Goa. At 39, he directs coaching operations at two GFDC facilities: the Quepem Centre at Pope John School Ground in Don Bosco, and the Cuncolim Centre at DSYA Ground in Cuncolim, where he mentors boys aged 13–15.
Fernandes transitioned from his own playing career, during which he represented Churchill Brothers in the U-19 National Football League and competed in the Goa League with multiple clubs including Cavelossim, St. Rock Fatrade, Salcete FC, and Curtorim Gymkhana. He holds an AFC C-License and emphasises comprehensive athlete development across technical, tactical, mental, and physical dimensions.
A philosophy built on four principles
His coaching philosophy centres on four principles: decision-making, belief, identity, and progress. Notable achievements include leading teams to the GFDC U-13 championship in 2017/18, the Boca Juniors U-13 title in 2018, and numerous grassroots tournament victories. He also secured the GFA 3rd Division title in 2019 and finished as runner-up in the 2nd Division during 2020/21.
Fernandes views grassroots football development as particularly rewarding, emphasising its role in building foundations for Goan football's future. His coaching approach is informed by admiration for figures like Bruno Coutinho and Cristiano Ronaldo.
Keep working hard every day and never give up until you achieve your goals — that is the true secret of success.
